Article is focused on building the easiest way for people to furnish their spaces. They’re unique because they build software not only for themselves - but their suppliers, orchestrating the entire supply chain from customer order to final-mile delivery.
Back in 2019, the engineering team launched a 2-5 year project to accelerate development by breaking up their monolith into domain applications and modernizing their systems. They initially looked to use Mulesoft, but as their requirements grew, they decided to use Apache Kafka as part of their event-driven architecture.

COVID-19 forced the whole world to go digital, and the eCommerce share of the furniture market significantly increased. During lockdown, people wanted to adorn their homes with new furniture.
Luckily for Article, they were a digital-only retailer. But were they ready for the tsunami of orders to follow?
No one could ever be ready for three months’ worth of Black Fridays.
Engineering priorities had to change to protect customer experience at all costs. They had to optimize order processing, tracking and fulfillment with a new urgency. And not to mention improving communication services to ensure customers were constantly kept up-to-date with the progress of their orders.
